WHAT IS MYOPIA?
Nearsightedness, or myopia, as it is medically termed, is a vision condition in which people can see close objects clearly, but objects farther away appear blurred.
- Mild: -0.25 to -3.00 D
- Moderate: -3.25 to -6.00 D
- High: greater than -6.00 D
WHY IS MYOPIA PROGRESSION A CONCERN?
Moderate and high myopia sometimes are associated with serious, vision-threatening side effects such as cataracts, glaucoma and retinal detachments.
WHAT IS MYOPIA CONTROL?
To identify and treat children with mild to moderate myopia who are progressing too fast. While all of these treatment modalities have been FDA approved to treat myopia, MiSight is the only FDA approved treatment methods specifically targeting myopia control in the United State. All of the other interventions are off-label should you decide to use them for your children. We may not be able to stop it completely but a small decrease per year can easily add up depending on your child’s rate of change. Myopia is permanent and it can be treated with LASIK, PRK or Cataract surgery after the age of 27 or stops progressing.
MYOPIA TREATMENT
Multifocal Glasses
Studies show that bifocal and progressive lenses slightly reduce the rate of progression of myopia. Even though this reduction is statistically significant, this option is the least effective.
Multifocal Contact Lenses
Your doctor will need to consider your child’s prescription to choose one of the following options:
- First ever FDA approved MiSight 1Day
- Natural Vue 1Day disposable
- Biofinity MF with center D
- Biofinity Toric MF with center D
- Duette center D progressive design
These contact lens are worn during the daytime and removed at night.
Low Dose Atropine Eyedrops
Low dose 0.05% atropine appears to offer an appropriate risk-benefit ratio, with no clinically significant visual side effects balanced against a reasonable and clinically significant reduction in myopia progression. Atropine may act directly or indirectly on the retina or scleral, inhibiting thinning or stretching of the scleral, and thereby eye growth.

- OSRx
Overnight Corneal Reshaping or Ortho-K
Orthokeratology contact lenses can be used to correct central vision while leaving peripheral myopic blur, which may slow the progression of myopia. The lens temporarily flatten the cornea and provide clear vision during the day without any glasses or contact lenses.
- Over night wear
- No daytime glasses or contacts
- Ideal for sports and swimming
